Managing Up: Communication Skills for Working with Your Boss

An interactive Storyline course designed to help professionals adapt their communication style to better align with their manager's preferences.

Overview

Many early- and mid-career professionals struggle to adapt their communication to different leadership styles—leading to misalignment, missed opportunities, and reduced productivity. This self-guided eLearning module, built in Articulate Storyline, helps learners identify their manager’s style and adapt their communication approach accordingly.

Solution

This interactive course simulates realistic workplace challenges through branching scenarios featuring two manager personas: a visionary and an analyst. Learners receive personalized feedback based on their decisions and complete hands-on activities like email writing and agenda planning. Custom narration and clean UX ensure a polished learner experience, whether accessed on desktop or mobile.

Potential Use Cases

  • As part of a leadership readiness or early-career development program

  • Embedded in a performance management or mentorship track at a tech company

  • Included in onboarding for new hires who will interface with multiple leaders

Measurement Strategy

To evaluate impact, organizations could use:

  • Pre/post-assessments to gauge confidence or skill shifts

  • Manager surveys to measure perceived communication improvements

  • On-the-job behavior tracking (e.g., more proactive updates, clearer requests, fewer miscommunications)

My Role

I led the end-to-end design and development of this project, including scripting, visual design, and Storyline build. I recorded narration with ElevenLabs and created custom interactions using triggers and variables. This project reflects my ability to design performance-driven training with measurable business outcomes, even in the absence of a real client brief.
